Piazza San Marco – Civitas Ludens
The main focus of the Carnevale di Venezia 2018: Creatum – Civitas Ludens, The Venice Carnival in the Spirit of fun and “playing” will be the topic of the game. Piazza San Marco, for that occasion, will take on the guise of a great circus, one of the most ancient forms of spectacle and show filled with amazement, technique and magic, where crafts and roles, ability and fantasy, games and school mix.
Inspired by this tradition the set designer of the Teatro La Fenice, Massimo Checchetto, decided to celebrate this year’s theme by choosing some elements from the Italian circus Togni, used also in the film “La Strada” by the Federico Fellini.
Not to miss will be the “La Bottega di Piazza San Marco” in which different traditional crafts and masters of these will alternate; glassmakers, mask makers, tailors, perfume makers and craftsmen will open their shop at the Piazza San Marco like it was in the Venice of the 8th century, to show an ancient work, magical, almost playful.
Additionally, every day the Caravan Circus will be present with performances, games and the CIRCUS SCHOOL in caravans.
On Saturday February 3 at 2.30 pm, the Festa delle Marie will kick off the shows in St. Mark’s Square. The twelve young Venetian ladies previously selected by an ad hoc jury, dressed in costumes made by Atelier Pietro Longhi with fabrics by Rubelli will be followed by a historical period costume procession organised by C.E.R.S. – European Consortium of Historical Re-enactments, from San Pietro di Castello to the stage in St. Mark’s Square, where they will be officially presented to the public.
The flight of the Angel will take place on Sunday, February 4 at 11.00 noon. Elisa Costantini, Maria of 2017 edition of Carnival, will descend from St. Mark’s bell tower at noon, dressed in a costume made by Atelier Stefano Nicolao.
Protagonist of the Flight of the Eagle to be held on Sunday, February 11, at 11.00 noon, will be the owner of Diesel, Renzo Rosso.
The Grand Finale will take place on Shrove Tuesday, February 13, with crowning of the winner of the 2018 edition of the ‘Festa delle Marie’, who will arrive in the Square at the end of the water procession departing from San Giacomo dell’Orio, and at 5.00 pm, the Flight of the Lion in St. Mark’s Square will mark the end of the celebrations. The gigantic Venetian flag will travel in the opposite direction to the other flights, that is, from the bottom to the top, about ninety meters that separate the centre of the stage from the belfry to the notes of the hymn of St. Mark.
